Tapioca starch industrial grade, also called technical grade tapioca starch, is derived from cassava and is intended for use in industrial or technical applications rather than in food or cooking. This type of tapioca starch is produced with specific properties designed to meet the needs of various industries, including paper production, textiles, adhesives, construction materials, and other non-food uses.
What is Tapioca starch industrial grade?
Tapioca starch is well-known for its high purity, consisting entirely of unprocessed tapioca. Derived from the cassava plant’s root, native tapioca starch has very few impurities, a neutral taste, and outstanding gel-forming abilities. Typically, tapioca starch is divided into two main types: food-grade tapioca starch, which is used in the food industry, and technical-grade tapioca starch, which is applied in non-food industries.
Technical-grade tapioca starch is used in a range of non-food industries, such as paper production, textiles, construction (including paint formulations), and others.
Specification of Tapioca Starch Industrial grade
Below is a general specification for Native tapioca starch Industrial grade
- Starch: Minimum 85%
- Moisture: Maximum 13%
- Whiteness: Minimum 90%
- Sulfur Dioxide (SO2): Maximum 30 ppm
- Viscosity: Minimum 650 BU (Brabender Units)

Cassava starch packaging way
Native tapioca starch technical grade can be packaged as below:
1. 50kg PP Bag: This packaging method consists of placing the tapioca starch in 50-kilogram polypropylene (PP) bags. These durable bags are widely used for the storage and transportation of native tapioca starch and are a common packaging choice in Vietnam.
2. 20/25kg PP/Kraft paper bag
Besides the 50kg bag, we can also offer smaller sizes, such as 20kg or 25kg bags, for packing tapioca starch according to customer specifications.
3. 850/500kg Jumbo Bag: For larger volumes, tapioca starch can be packed in jumbo bags/super sack/big bag with capacities of 850 kilograms or 500 kilograms. Watch the process of packing tapioca starch into 850-kg jumbo bags. HERE
Other tapioca starch products for Industrial Sectors
Pregelatinized tapioca starch
Pregelatinized tapioca starch is a modified version of plant-based tapioca starch that has undergone a pregelatinization process. In this process, vegan native tapioca starch is heated and dried, altering its properties and allowing it to dissolve more easily in both cold and warm water.
This physically-modified tapioca starch is used in Charcoal Briquettes. Find out more here: https://vietnamtapiocastarch.vn/tapioca-starch-for-charcoal-briquettes
Cationic starch
Cationic tapioca starch is a modified starch that has been chemically treated. The products is commonly used in paper industry.
E1404 Oxidised tapioca starch
Oxidized Tapioca Starch (E1404) is a modified starch made from tapioca, a starchy substance extracted from the cassava plant’s roots. The oxidation process treats the tapioca starch with an oxidizing agent, altering its properties for use in various industrial applications.
Oxidised starch tapioca base is also in paper and board application: https://vietnamtapiocastarch.vn/oxidised-tapioca-starch-for-paper-and-board
Applications of Cassava starch Technical grade
Paper Industry
Tapioca starch industrial grade is essential in the paper industry, as it improves both paper quality and production efficiency. Along with native industrial-grade tapioca starch, other modified forms, such as cationic starch and oxidized starch E1404, are also used in this sector.
Textile Industry
In the textile industry, tapioca starches play versatile roles, supporting different stages of fabric production and improvement. Used as sizing agents, they help stiffen and protect threads, boosting weaving efficiency and ensuring uniform fabric quality.
Additionally, tapioca starches are used as color thickeners in printing, helping produce vibrant, durable prints with sharp details.
Construction industry
In the construction industry, tapioca starch is an important filler in paint products. When used as a filler, it improves the viscosity and texture of paint formulations, enhancing application properties and ensuring consistent coatings.
This product can also be applied in the metal industry, particularly in steel products.
Adhesive Industry
Cassava starch is widely used in the adhesive industry because of its strong binding properties. As a primary component in adhesive formulations, it serves as a versatile binding agent, helping to bond different materials together.
Charcoal Briquettes
Tapioca starch is a perfect option for binding charcoal briquettes during production. When combined with water, it forms a thick, sticky gel that effectively binds the charcoal particles together, creating a solid bond once dried. This adhesive strength ensures the briquettes’ integrity and durability throughout handling, transportation, and burning.
