Wood plastic composite materials are created by mixing wood powders with TEOS solution to produce nano SiO2 particles that can bond with the -OH groups in the this powder. When these SiO2 particles adhere to the surface of the powder, they fill in the gaps, providing the powder with a water-repellent coating and making it more compatible with the plastic surface. The chemicals in the additives initiate crosslinking reactions, forming bridges between the plastic base material and the powder.

  5. Calendering and Cutting: The paper surface is smoothed by calendering to enhance its smoothness and quality. The paper is then cut to the desired size.
  6. Packaging and Distribution: The finished paper is quality-checked, packaged, and distributed.

Incense production

Wood powder is one of the key ingredients used in incense production. It is mixed with sawdust, powder coating, and fragrant powders in a specific ratio to ensure that the incense burns easily, releases a pleasant fragrance, and lasts for a long time. As a result, the mixing process is the most challenging step in making incense.
Afterward, water is gradually added to the mixture until it reaches the desired consistency. The mixture is then shaped into incense sticks and left to dry, resulting in the final product.

Wood powder is one of the main wood products exported from Vietnam. One of the importing markets is South Korea. Its export to South Korea is primarily made from the residue of rubber wood, pine, and acacia from Vietnam’s planted forests.
Typically, it has a moisture content of 8% and a mesh size ranging from 20 to 80. However, there is also a specialized type with a moisture content of 4% and a mesh size of 80 – 100 that is also available.

What Is Biodiesel And Why Is It Important?

Biodiesel is a form of biofuel that burns more cleanly than gasoline, leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions and complete biodegradability. It is made from vegetable oils, yellow grease, used cooking oils, or animal fats.

Research indicates that biodiesel can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70% compared to diesel. Additionally, the levels of harmful exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and hydrocarbons are all significantly reduced when biofuels are used. What Is Used Cooking Oil For Biodiesel?

Used cooking oils (UCO) are oils and fats that have been utilized for cooking or frying in various settings, including food processing, restaurants, fast food establishments, and households. The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) categorizes them as Municipal Wastes, which include household waste and similar commercial, industrial, and institutional wastes.

Used cooking oil is converted into biodiesel through a series of simple chemical reactions known as Transesterification, a process that has been effectively implemented by many countries worldwide. This is a promising raw material for producing environmentally friendly biodiesel, which is gradually replacing fossil fuels that are becoming increasingly scarce.

According to Hanoi Radio and Television Station, there are currently about 10,000 food service establishments in Hanoi. On average, each of these establishments produces between 1.5 to 2 liters of used cooking oil per day. After a pilot project was carried out at local restaurants, a research project in the area collected nearly 1,500 liters of waste cooking oil for recycling into biodiesel (B5, B10…), a sustainable biofuel.

Vietnam’s export of plastics

Vietnam primarily exports finished and semi-finished plastic products. The three largest categories, including plastic bags, plastic sheets/films, and construction-related plastic goods, account for 54% of the total export value of Vietnam plastic products.

In addition to plastic products, Vietnam also exports raw plastic materials. Before 2018, plastic raw materials made up less than 20% of the country’s total plastic exports. However, since 2018, this percentage began to rise, reaching 24% in 2018 and 27% in both 2019 and 2020.

In a 12-month period from July 2022 to June 2023, Vietnam exported $145.8 million worth of aluminum extrusion to the United States. This accounted for 8.2% of total U.S. imports in this category. As for aluminum wire and cable products, Vietnam’s export value to the U.S. during the same period reached $96 million, more than double the value from the previous period. 

Vietnam is projected to contribute 7.6% to the total U.S. import value of aluminum and aluminum products in 2024. This figure places Vietnam fourth among the top exporters to the U.S. market.

For fishing activities, the East Sea is home to approximately 2,000 species of fish, including around 130 species with high economic value, such as mackerel, tuna, and catfish. Both the coastal waters and the offshore areas of our country have significant fishery resources. In 2023, the total area dedicated to aquaculture included 1.3 million hectares for inland farming and 9.5 million cubic meters for marine cages. The overall production reached 5.408 million tons, marking a 3.5% increase.

In terms of aquaculture activities, Vietnam is recognized as having significant potential for developing aquaculture. With a coastline of over 3,260 kilometers and 112 rivers and estuaries flowing into the sea, the country has ample opportunities for cultivating brackish and saltwater seafood. Additionally, thousands of large and small islands scattered along the coastline provide areas suitable for year-round aquaculture development.

According to VASEP, between 2018 and 2023, Vietnam’s seafood production rose from 7.7 million tons to 9.3 million tons, representing a 20% increase. Of this total, aquaculture contributed 58%, while fishing accounted for 42%.

Fish

Vietnam is currently the largest producer and exporter of pangasius in the world, accounting for 52% of global production and 90% of pangasius trade. In 2023, global pangasius production reached 3.1 million tons, with an expected increase to 3.2 million tons this year. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam’s pangasius products are popular in many international markets due to their delicious taste and competitive prices.

China remains the largest market for both whole frozen fish and fillets, representing 29% of total frozen pangasius imports, followed by the United States at 15% and Brazil at 6%. Vietnam has a strong export advantage for various types of fish, including frozen pangasius, basa fish, striped mackerel, and ocean tuna.

In addition to frozen fish, Vietnam’s dried fish products are also highly sought after. Data from VASEP shows that in April 2023 alone, exports of dried marine fish increased by 65%, reaching nearly $26 million. Over the first four months of the year, this product category generated nearly $78 million, marking a 33% increase compared to the same period last year. The two most popular dried fish types from Vietnam are anchovies, which account for 66%, and yellow striped bass, which make up 14%.

Shrimp

The main markets for Vietnamese shrimp are the United States (accounting for 20-23% of the country’s total shrimp export value annually), the EU (15-20%), China (13-15%), and South Korea (9-10%). Vietnamese shrimp products, whether processed or fresh, are favored in international markets due to their attractive packaging and consistent quality. Vietnamese shrimp consistently rank high in major markets such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, the EU, China, and the United States.

Squid and Octopus

In the category of squid and octopus, processed products outperformed frozen varieties. Exports of processed squid increased by 22% in the third quarter and by 13% over the first nine months of the year. The five largest export markets for squid and octopus from Vietnam are: South Korea, Japan, China & Hong Kong (China), Thailand, and the EU.

Crab and lobster exports have seen remarkable success in 2024, showing strong growth throughout the year. In the third quarter, exports soared by 56%, and over the first nine months, they jumped by 66%, reaching a total of $227 million. Vietnam produces flooring using various materials, including wood-based products, plastics, and stone. Due to the country’s rich supply of quality raw materials, flooring options like laminated flooring, SPC flooring, and WPC flooring are widely available in both domestic and international markets.

In terms of wood-based decking, Vietnam’s wood processing industry showed signs of recovery in early 2024, with increased orders from traditional markets supporting positive growth and helping meet export targets for the year.

According to Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the country also presents a viable alternative to China with its stone-polymer composite (SPC) flooring, supported by both local production capacity and imported high-quality materials. Vietnam’s plastics market is expected to expand from 10 million metric tons in 2023 to 15 million MT by 2028, growing at a compound annual rate of 8.44%. By 2030, the SPC flooring market is projected to reach a value of $76.19 billion, highlighting its strong growth potential.

Vietnam Common Flooring Types

Laminated Flooring

Laminated flooring is one of the most popular flooring options today, primarily composed of HDF, adhesive, and additional additives.

Structure of Laminate Flooring: Laminate flooring typically has four layers: an aluminum oxide layer, a decorative paper layer, an HDF core, and a bottom layer.

  • The surface layer is made of aluminum oxide, which serves to protect the flooring, enhance wear resistance, and safeguard the decorative paper underneath.
  • The decorative paper is made from texture paper coated in melamine adhesive, which is pressed under high pressure and heat. This process creates a durable plastic layer that protects the decorative layer and bonds it to the HDF core.
  • The HDF core is formed from wood fibers derived from wood chips and processed wood waste.

WPC Flooring

WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) is a synthetic material made from a blend of PE plastic and wood pulp, crafted through various production processes for each mold, resulting in a highly durable material. WPC flooring is commonly used for exterior decoration.

Compared to traditional flooring options, WPC decking offers superior care, durability, and water resistance. It typically consists of four layers: a wear layer, a printed top layer, a core layer, and a backing layer.

SPC Flooring

SPC flooring, or Stone Plastic Composite flooring, features a sturdy core layer made from a mix of natural limestone powder, polyvinyl chloride, and stabilizers, which provides exceptional durability and water resistance. It is widely used for indoor decoration.

Although Vietnam entered the SPC flooring market later than other countries exporting to the U.S., it quickly gained traction due to the diversity and quality of its product lines. In 2021, Vietnam’s SPC exports to the U.S. were valued at $784 million, accounting for 14% of the total U.S. market value, with a volume of 84 million sq.m, making up 19.2% of U.S. consumption.

In addition to these varieties, Vietnam is also renowned for other decking products, including hardwood flooring, engineered vinyl flooring, and assembled flooring panels.

The industry is also expanding, with new factories opening in other southern provinces like Tay Ninh, Binh Phuoc, and Long An.

In the past decade, Vietnam has made significant progress in the global furniture supply chain, ranking as the world’s sixth-largest furniture manufacturer in 2023. The country has experienced “impressive growth,” climbing from 13th place in 2014 to 6th in 2023 based on value, published by CSIL (Center for Industrial Studies).

Vietnam Wooden Furniture Export

Currently, there is a growing demand for ready-to-assemble/flat-packed furniture made from wood-based panels. Shifting away from traditional structural rigidity, the popularity of furniture designed with the ready-to-assemble (RTA) concept is rising, particularly among younger consumers from the Y and Z generations.

Ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture, also called knock-down (KD), flat-pack, or kit furniture, requires customers to assemble the pieces themselves. Vietnam’s furniture industry is capable of supplying furniture in this format, including items like sink base cabinets, vanity or microwave cabinetry for kitchens, drawer base cabinets, and storage cabinetry for bedrooms, among others.
