AN INTRODUCTION TO VIETNAM INDUSTRIAL SPRINGS: SMALL BUT INDISPENSABLE COMPONENTS

by Hang Nguyen 30 April, 2026

Industrial springs may be small components, but they play a critical role in countless industrial applications by storing and releasing mechanical energy efficiently. In Vietnam, these products are part of a rapidly developing supporting industry that is becoming increasingly important in the global manufacturing supply chain. To better understand their significance, let’s explore what industrial springs are and how Vietnam’s supporting industry is evolving.

What Are Industrial Springs & Supporting Industry Overview In Vietnam

Industrial springs are mechanical components widely used across different applications to store and release energy. They are typically manufactured from durable materials such as steel, allowing them to withstand heavy loads and repeated usage over time. These devices operate based on the principle of elasticity: they deform when a force is applied and return to their original shape once that force is removed.

Industrial springs are among the widely produced products in Vietnam’s supporting industry. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, this sector plays a crucial role in the country’s future development strategy. Supporting industries are regarded as the “backbone” of the manufacturing sector and serve as a key driver for Vietnam to integrate more deeply into the global value chain.

According to Mr. Vũ Bá Phú, Director General of the Trade Promotion Agency (Ministry of Industry and Trade), Vietnam currently has around 1,700 foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises operating in the supporting industry, accounting for approximately 40% of the total number of companies in this sector. In terms of strategic direction, the Vietnam Industry Agency has identified several key supporting industry sectors for focused investment. Specifically, priority is given to five main areas: mechanical engineering, automotive, electrical–electronics and semiconductors, textiles–footwear, and basic materials.

Industrial spring is a product in Vietnam’s supporting industry.

Why Are Industrial Springs Important?

Energy Storage And Release

Industrial springs are highly effective at storing mechanical energy when they are compressed, stretched, or twisted, and then releasing that energy when required. This simple but powerful capability allows: Without this ability to manage energy, many mechanical systems would need significantly more complex and costly power sources.

Shock Absorption And Vibration Control

In demanding industrial environments, machinery is continuously exposed to impacts, vibrations, and sudden forces. Industrial springs help absorb these shocks, protecting sensitive parts, minimizing wear and tear, and reducing the risk of expensive failures. This is particularly important in:

  • Automotive suspension systems
  • Industrial presses and stamping machines
  • Conveyor systems and heavy equipment

Motion Control And Stability

Springs deliver a stable force, enable return mechanisms, and help control positioning. They ensure that components return to their original position, maintain proper tension, and apply precise pressure when needed. This level of reliability reduces downtime and supports consistent, high-quality production.

Versatility Across Industries

Industrial springs are essential components because they are used across nearly every industry:

  • Automotive — suspension systems, seating, and engine components
  • Aerospace — landing gear, control systems, and internal mechanisms
  • Medical devices — surgical instruments, implants, and diagnostic equipment
  • Manufacturing & machinery — presses, robotics, valves, and packaging systems
  • Agriculture & construction — heavy machinery and structural support
  • Electronics & consumer goods — switches, retractable parts, and everyday mechanisms

Economic And Operational Impact

High-quality industrial springs have a direct impact on productivity and cost efficiency. Even a single spring failure can lead to costly downtime, whereas a well-engineered spring can help reduce energy use, decrease maintenance requirements, and enhance overall machine performance. For this reason, investing in durable, precisely manufactured springs is a smart long-term decision for manufacturers.

In summary, although industrial springs are small components, their importance should not be underestimated. They provide flexibility, strength, safety, and reliability — making them essential elements in Vietnam’s expanding industrial sector and global manufacturing supply chains.

Common Vietnam Spring Types & Their Uses

Below are the types of springs commonly found in Vietnam and their applications:

Helical Springs (Compression/Extension): These account for more than 60% of industrial spring exports.

Compression Springs: Compression springs are the most widely used type of spring. They consist of open coils designed to resist compressive forces effectively. They are commonly used in automotive suspension systems, industrial shock absorbers, and cushioning mechanisms.

Compression spring

Extension Springs: Extension springs are coiled components designed to handle tensile (pulling) forces. They are tightly wound and work by stretching to store energy. Each end typically features a hook or loop, allowing them to be easily attached to different parts of a machine. These springs are commonly used in medical devices (such as stretchers), hand tools, and garage door systems.

Extension spring

Torsion Springs: Torsion springs generate a twisting force, known as torque, when their ends are rotated in opposite directions. This allows them to efficiently store and release energy. They are commonly used in applications that require rotational force, such as door hinges, levers, and specialized switches.

Torsion spring

Elastic Metal Pieces & Stamping Parts: These are precision-formed metal components made through stamping processes. They are commonly used as connectors or fastening elements in electronic devices and small hardware assemblies.
